In 1973 when my father was serving in the Peace Corps in Nairobi, Kenya, he took me, 11 years old, and my brother, 6, to the local park on Sundays to play soccer. As soon as my brother and I brought our soccer ball to the field, dozens of boys, ages 6-12, seemed to come out of nowhere. They were skin and bones. Most of them had nothing but tattered shorts and no shirts. A few smaller boys could...

Never sell. Who ever dies with the most watches win!😅
If our decision making is influenced by an endless chain of causality, then determinism is true and we don't have free will. But if the opposite is true-indeterminism then our actions must be random - still not free will.
Thank you. I can testify that you are spot on. Add to this, sell one to buy one. My journey started with a well meaning person telling me that every man should have more than one watch and that a G-Shock was not appropriate for most situations. Hundreds of watches later.... Unfortunately, that may not be an exaggeration as I am trying to sell 2 large totes full of watches now. Ignore what people say you should have, what do you like and want. Once you know that, buy it. I have a LOT of watches that look similar to what I really wanted but didn't scratch the itch. In every case, I could have bought the "real thing" many times over and had more money in my pocket.
*thanks for the indirect shout-out* 😂 *Sold off all my substitutes to have $$$ for that SLGW003 in August.* *All in or nothing, no substitute* *The question is, am I now suffering from the spec monster perfection hunger fallacy?*
I always plan on my impulse buys.
McMahon, you spending $4k on an sla043? 😮
@@WristWatcher no. I decided to keep my 5 watches for now
Confession, I have been a Chrono Crusader for the Omega Seamaster and Planet Ocean range for a long time. In my defense, they are the best watches out there and anyone who doesn’t agree is a know-nothing loser.
I own 32 watches (some which I bought as a teenager in the 70s) and have always bought what I wanted after careful consideration, regardless whether anybody else liked them. I often change watches twice a day, and cannot bring myself to sell any of them. It is a shame as I would really like to own fewer watches.
I think chi-towncalifornia5916 has been deeply analyzing your obsessive watch behavior. And you thought your followers weren’t getting anything out of your videos.

The cerulean watch. Yes, cerulean might be the sky blue tint of some notable watches. But, more I'm reminded of Meryl Streep's monologue from "The Devil Wears Prada" on the cerulean sweater, and how options for watch "stuff" is also determined by marketing, product placement and influencers. And, obviously it's working.
LOL the Chrono Crusader is real. I assume you already have a term for the anxiety, confusion and frustration of not being sure which watch to put on in the morning? Hmm.. maybe something like watch selection dysphoria…
Wrist Rotation Anxiety

Looking forward to the ebook Jeff! I bought the first three and enjoyed them a lot: Watch Addiction Rules, Secret Life of Watch Addicts, and The Watch Survivor
Some great thinking packed in those terms. It's very enjoyable to watch. If I think of anything, I'd love to contribute. Or at least offer it up for consideration 👍
That guy would go nuts looking at my collection 20 watches every one is a tool watch or a diver of no less than 100m WR besides my speed master and Bulova lunar pilot mostly black with a few grey, white ,and blue dials with different complications gmt, chronograph, 24 hour, power reserve, small seconds, etc but still tool watches dress watches have never appealed to me I just go with a dressier tool watch. I’ve seen a lot of chrono crusaders over the years most of the time a Rolex or omega or some obscure brand fanatic I’m all about being passionate I love seiko and GS I have an entire box but everyone is different so you should get what you like and forget what anyone else says just be informed before you make a purchase you don’t need to spend thousands to get a nice durable watch that will last for years my advice if you’re just starting out is to avoid buying frenzies and impulse buys and impulse sells that can be just as costly and before you sell a watch think long and hard to avoid any chance of a rebuy in the future or having watch regret letting go of a watch impulsively that you can’t replace for what you paid for it and is no longer a good value proposition considering the other watches that are now in the same price bracket. An SLA017 would round that seiko collection out beautifully. I think the grail watch question is an interesting one some people look at it in an obtainable sense like yourself $10k is a lot of money for a watch but it’s absolutely doable mine is a meteorite Rolex gmt or Daytona which I might be able to afford one day but my no budget is probably a grey dial 5990 even if I had the money I can’t ever see myself spending that much on a watch but hey when I started watching your Channel 8 or 9 years ago I thought it was crazy to spend $1k on a quartz tuna I have an sbbn031 now and it’s far from my most expensive watch I guess I’m lucky to have little anxiety over collecting I’m just as content wearing my seiko flightmaster or one of my promaster, glycine or homage watches as I am my omegas or GS for me a one watch collection would be impossible and I don’t think no matter what I had in my collection or how many watches I had it would keep my eye from wandering 🤣
Thanks for the shoutout, and incorporating my term into your dictionary, McMahon. Just to clarify, what I meant by not wanting to own redundant versions of the same purpose item was that I have no issues with owning multiple Seiko divers, or multiple Pilot pens, it's that each item has a specific role or purpose to fulfill, and if I find that if I have too many of those items competing for that one purpose, I get analysis paralysis. Thus I become stuck trying to decide which item to keep. It's why, for example, I only own one retractable nib fountain pen, or one white dial dive watch. Each item serves a set of purposes I created; the challenge is not to acquire too many items before I establish my criteria. I am currently in the faze of trying out my cheaper extra fine nib fountain pens, in order to figure out what I want in a pen with nib of that grind (e.g., Do I want a pencil-like feedback, or smooth feedback?; Wet flow or conservative flow?, etc.) before committing to purchase a gold nib model. On a side note, please add "Mid-sized Palate Cleanser Watch" to the dictionary.
Thanks for the clarification. I stand corrected.
@@JeffreyMcMahon It's all good, McMahon, I did not clarifying myself sufficiently beforehand.
Indeed, I already have. I'm up to 77 entries. Just 23 more to go.
Scrollpiphany: a watch that waits for you at the very bottom of your search feed, the one that will answer all your watch uncertainty the moment you see it, if you can just keep scrolling a little longer to get to it. A watch no one ever finds.
I only have a few. The internet buy- when you love a watch until you get it in person. Next, the the ineffable love- liking a watch not cause of price or anything you can put in words. For some reason you just really connect with it. It’s impossible to explain. That’s how I am with my fujitsubo. Also, or lastly the Angelina Jolie or Margo Robbie watch. The watch that’s great in many ways that you should love based on objective reasoning, but does nothing for you. You could take it or leave it and a lot of times wouldn’t pick it over a “lesser” watch. Kinda goes with the ineffable thing.
I see two great ones in your comments: The Angelina Jolie Watch, a timepiece with a beautiful looks but you can't connect with it; The Gerard Depardieu Watch; the watch doesn't have conventional Hollywood Brad Pitt looks but you connect with it like your Fujitsubo. I'll use those. Thanks.
I support this effort. Please make this a reality.
Love it. Happy to contribute!
First 😂
I recommednd all to buy the one wa<tch you wiukd like to wear at yhour own funeral. Buy this watch now and wear it until passing awayh. Look at the watch each day and be gratefuk for living!
And when the substitute is better and more enjoyable than the ‘Rolex’… and the Rolex can be very uncomfortable to wear. I have not wore my expensive watches ( the ones I did not not sell) for ages. And the affordable ones I love on the day. And love another one on another day… but yes I’m obsessive. And I love a good deal. So my plan is to reduce the addiction to one watch per month. If it’s on special…
Dude, you look 52, tops. Good work sir.

Did you buy that Seiko LX? Wheres your new watch we've been waiting for?
No. More inclined to get a Seiko sla043
@JeffreyMcMahon big change in sizes? Great watch surely, but way overpriced! Right on though, not my money.
Can I suggest another rule? “The plasticity of perception“: people always argue about whether our watches are too big or too small, but in fact, your perception resets after a couple days to get used to whatever size you are wearing. So when you are used to wearing a 36 mm vintage Rolex, a 42 mm Seiko looks huge, and vice versa. A lot of people don’t seem to understand this at all, and so dig in on the idea that only one size watch works with their wrist, or even that smaller watches aren’t manly, which is silly, given that they were manly enough for the soldiers who fought in the world wars.
Excellent addition to the Watch Obsession Lexicon. With your permission, I'll quote you for a video presentation and the book.
@@JeffreyMcMahon love it!!
“Dogs…because people suck”. Sorry to hear about the trolls McMahon. I’ve had to get off a lot of forums/social media because of the toxic people. Hard to shake it, but you’re not alone.
What drives me nuts is when someone buys a clone of high end watch then begins to tell you how stupid you are to pay the price of a Rolex, Tudor etc. how better their Chinese clone of the watch is in price spec etc. If its so damn good why the hell do you have to try to sell everyone it is. People just stop. If you have to justify your position on the watch, knock it off you have lost. I had to get off watch crunch for this exact reason. Cant do it, done lol. My wife who is a psychologist gave me the head shrink reason people do this, but it was a Master's thesis explanation lol. But it boiled down to insecurity lol.
Funny that, buying those expensive watches also boils down to insecurity lol.
McMahon you should get a squale 1521. Enough with the citizens. You're like a street hardened junkie trying to get a fix off the pixie stick of watches. You need pure black tar heroine directly in your vein McMahon. Squale 1521 is that grandaddy of divers.
I do love the 1521 Militaire, but it would compete w/ my SLA055. I'll stick w/ 5 watches for now.
@@JeffreyMcMahon it wouldn't compete. It would be like a prime Mike Tyson vs Rick morranis. But I respect your decision. Your happiness is all that matters to me
@@jjjfffppp Let's see what I do for my birthday in a few months; either the Squale or the Seiko SLA043.
Here’s my advice: Limit social media usage, limit your purchases, and buy watches that are enjoyable to wear, so you can “touch grass” with them. All the experiences you spend with those watches out on social occasions, creating memorable experiences will make you appreciate your watches even more. You can’t do that if you own too many watches, or own uncomfortable watches. Why did I sell all my Seiko divers except my SKX009? It was my first Seiko watch, the watch I had the most amount of memorable experiences while wearing, and most importantly, it fits my wrist.
Stay busy being productive and you will soon only want one decent quartz watch. Although I have five watches I am so busy these days that I only grab my Seiko SNE573P1. The other four are - Seiko SUR447, Tissot PRX 35mm digital, Tudor BB36 and a Tudor GMT. They could be up for the chop.
You're not even taking your own advice. Sell them now or you're a phony.
Quartz watches are underrated - Citizen is putting out some nice ones lately!
Where did you buy the chocolate bar strap?
Used on Watch Recon but you can get on eBay for 150
There are way too many enthusiasts who can’t do #1 on their own. So many posts asking for advice/direction and/or validation. Part of the reason why so many collections look the same.
I like to watch the Watch Philosopher! (Philosopher literally: philia, the love we feel for those who shaped us, plus sophros, practical wisdom, that is, knowledge that actually helps guide us in our everyday lives.)
Hey Jeff. What a shame I was enjoying reading your stuff on there. Always some idiots spoil it for everyone.
For my personality, rules 2 and 3 are "'Law Of Nature'" level axiomatic. That 2% thing is fascinating, and rather sad. Such a disproportionate and destructive effect. I have a similar 2% theory of behavior that I've been thinking through for years. I've worked in hospitality for much of my life, essentially hotels. 98% of guests walk in and just want to be liked, to be pleasant, and have a stress free enjoyable stay. Yet, there's always that 2%. Like your 2% being awful enough for you to completely bail on a social media platform. The hospitality 2% is vile enough to ruin my day, and in bad cases, ruin all the other guests stays too. Bonus percentage. Of the 98% of guests who are pleasant and well behaved. How many are on the psychopath spectrum, but disguise it well? What percentage of the 98% would I, for example, under no circumstances want looking after my pet?
“That angle, No! I can’t do this!” 😂😂
Jeffrey, I've been seriously thinking about selling all but 2 watches and move on from collecting
Sometimes our sanity requires such a move. But people warn me that "none of us get out of this hobby alive or unharmed."
@@JeffreyMcMahon unharmed 🤣
It’s the 1% that messes things up for the 99% in all areas of life. That 023 and its monoblock case is iconic, the 019 is on my short list. Opinions are everywhere and are often cheap, buy what you like, icons are hard to beat.
